Jacob was born on February 12th, 1797 in Oost-Knollendam (NL) and his baptism took place there on February 12th, 1797.1   Jacob's father was Jacob Aldertsz. Groot and his mother was Neeltje Harmens Ruijs(ch).  His paternal grandparents were Aldert Jacobse Groot and Trijntje Jacobs (Laan).  He had five brothers and two sisters, named Auke, Aldert, Harmen, Aldert, Cornelis, Sijtje and Zijtje.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.  He had three half-sisters named Trijntje, Grietje and Trijntje Jacobs.
