Auke was born on November 13th, 1787 in Oost-Knollendam (NL) and his baptism took place there on November 18th, 1787.  Auke's father was Jacob Aldertsz. Groot and his mother was Neeltje Harmens Ruijs(ch).  His paternal grandparents were Aldert Jacobse Groot and Trijntje Jacobs (Laan).  He had five brothers and two sisters, named Aldert, Harmen, Aldert, Jacob, Cornelis, Sijtje and Zijtje.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He had three half-sisters named Trijntje, Grietje and Trijntje Jacobs.
