Aldert was born on October 25th, 1793 in Oost-Knollendam (NL) and his baptism took place there on October 29th, 1793.1   Aldert's father was Jacob Aldertsz. Groot and his mother was Neeltje Harmens Ruijs(ch).  His paternal grandparents were Aldert Jacobse Groot and Trijntje Jacobs (Laan).  He had five brothers and two sisters, named Auke, Aldert, Harmen, Jacob, Cornelis, Sijtje and Zijtje.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.  He had three half-sisters named Trijntje, Grietje and Trijntje Jacobs.
