Jan was born on March 5th, 1763 in Schellingwoude (NL) and his baptism took place there on March 5th, 1763.1   Jan's father was Frans Greuning and his mother was Mietje Steening.  He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Hendrik, Hendrik, Aaltje, Antje, Hendrikje, Maretje, Gerritje, Gerritje and Antje.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
