Jan was born on June 26th, 1757 in Oost-Knollendam (NL).1   Jan's father was Aldert Jacobse Groot and his mother was Trijntje Jacobs (Laan).  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Aldertsz. Groot and Guurtje Sijmons Gootsel.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Jacob Aldertsz., Jan Aldertsz., Cornelis, Antje Aldertsd, Grietje Aldertsd and Maartje Aldertsd.
