Magdalina was born on July 25th, 1837 in Leerdam (NL).  Magdalina's father was Adrianus Frederik Schenk and her mother was Areke van Oort.  Her paternal grandparents were Coenraad of Koenraad Schenk and Magdalena (Helena) Kolff; her maternal grandparents were Gerrit van Oort and Willemina Janssen.  She had four brothers and three sisters, named Johan Coenraad, Adrianus Frederik, Adrianus, Johannes, Willemina, Magdalena Hillegonda and Hillegonda.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
